چکیده

Latest scientific and engineering advances have started to recognize the need of defining multiple types of uncertainty. Probabilistic modeling cannot handle situations with incomplete or little information on which to evaluate a probability, or when that information is nonspecific, ambiguous, or conflicting [1]. Many generalized models of uncertainty have been developed to treat such situations. Among them, there are five major frameworks that use interval-based representation of uncertainty, namely: imprecise probabilities, possibility theory, DempsterShafer theory of evidence, Fuzzy set theory, and convex set modeling. Regardless what model is adopted, the proper interval solution will represents the first requirement for any further rigorous formulation.

Interval Based Finite Elements for Uncertainty Quantification in Engineering Mechanics

This paper illustrates how interval analysis can be used as a basis for generalized models of uncertainty. When epistemic uncertainty is presented as a range and the aleatory is based on available information, or when random variables are assigned an interval probability, the uncertainty will have a Probability Bound (PB) structure. When Interval Monte Carlo (IMC) is used to sample random varia...

Non Uniform Rational B Spline (NURBS) Based Non-Linear Analysis of Straight Beams with Mixed Formulations

Displacement finite element models of various beam theories have been developed traditionally using conventional finite element basis functions (i.e., cubic Hermite, equi-spaced Lagrange interpolation functions, or spectral/hp Legendre functions). Various finite element models of beams differ from each other in the choice of the interpolation functions used for the transverse deflection w, tota...

hp-Spectral Finite Element Analysis of Shear Deformable Beams and Plates

There are different finite element models in place for predicting the bending behavior of shear deformable beams and plates. Mostly, the literature abounds with traditional equi-spaced Langrange based low order finite element approximations using displacement formulations. However, the finite element models of Timoshenko beams and Mindlin plates with linear interpolation of all generalized disp...

Mixed-Mode Stress Intensity Factors for Surface Cracks in Functionally Graded Materials Using Enriched Finite Elements

Three-dimensional enriched finite elements are used to compute mixed-mode stress intensity factors (SIFs) for three-dimensional cracks in elastic functionally graded materials (FGMs) that are subject to general mixed-mode loading. The method, which advantageously does not require special mesh configuration/modifications and post-processing of finite element results, is an enhancement of previou...
